STPRA supports the following actions to promote prescribed burning and prevent wildfires:
Education
• Educate landowners to the importance of wildfire preparedness; work with neighbors to ensure there is joint cooperation for wildfire preparedness
• Know your neighbors contact information
• Educate ranch owners and managers to the importance of prescribed burning for pasture management and mitigating chances of wildfire
• Educate local fire departments of the importance of a landowner’s tool of prescribed burning as a land management tool
• Ensure that the fire chief and other fire fighting volunteers take prescribed burning training; that includes a state certification (Many firemen today from cities and towns have never had the opportunity to be exposed to a true wildfire.)
• Work with South Texas Prescribed Burn Association to act as a clearinghouse of information concerning burn bans, prescribed burns necessary for prescribed burn certification and continuing education
Equipment
• Encourage landowners to share equipment to help fight wildfires
• Promote fundraisers, grants, and landowner donations to local fire departments to ensure they have the proper equipment to fight wildfires on ranch land and help landowners with prescribed burns
Technology
• Use online resources for prescribed burning information
• Use GPS information for landowner and emergency worker use
• Create landowner maps for use of emergency situations/wildfires
• Encourage local public safety organizations to use communication channels that are compatible with each other and the Texas Forest Service
